Description

What do bed bugs look Like?

The bed bug (Cimex lectularius) and its relatives in the family Cimicidae are small blood-sucking insects that primarily feed on birds and mammals. Bed bugs have a distinctive appearance, with a short, broad head connected to a broad prothorax and an oval body shape. Accurate identification of bed bugs is essential for targeting control measures effectively, as different species within this group may have varying habits.

The common bed bug is the only species within this insect family fully adapted to living alongside humans. Once nearly eradicated in the United States after World War II, bed bugs have made a significant resurgence over the past decade. They are often inadvertently transported on furniture, luggage, and other items, which is why infestations are frequently observed in high-traffic areas like apartments, hotels, and motels. Effective bed bug control requires coordinated treatment of all infested areas simultaneously due to their tendency to spread and hide.

Signs of Bed Bugs Infestation

Bites on the Skin

Bed bug bites often appear as small, red, itchy welts or bumps on exposed skin. They are usually arranged in a line or cluster and may occur on areas like the arms, neck, and face. These bites can cause discomfort and may lead to allergic reactions in some individuals

Rusty or Reddish Stains

You might notice small rust-colored stains on bedding, mattresses, or walls. These stains are caused by bed bugs being crushed after feeding. They can also be found on sheets or pajamas, indicating their presence.

Dark Spots

Small, dark spots (about the size of a pinhead) on bedding or furniture are often fecal matter from bed bugs. This can be a key indicator of an infestation and may also appear on walls or other surfaces where bed bugs reside.

Shed Skins and Egg Casings

As bed bugs grow, they molt and leave behind shed skins, which can be found in areas where they hide. Additionally, you may find tiny, oval-shaped egg casings (about the size of a grain of rice) in the same locations, indicating an active infestation.
